KANARIS THEATRE
An evening of discussion and remembrance, raising awareness of the ‘Punjab Registers’, a significant initiative that commemorates the contribution and sacrifice of Punjabi soldiers during the World Wars.
One in six of those who served in British armies during the First World War came from India, and 500,000 of these were recruited from the province of Punjab. The United Kingdom Punjab Heritage Association, in collaboration with the University of Greenwich, are now able to identify most of these men for the first time.
They have acquired and digitised the Punjab Registers, a unique archive of historical documents which record the names and service histories of some 320,000 Punjabi recruits.
For the first time, one million people of Punjabi origin living in the UK will be able to trace their wartime heritage, connect with their family stories and recognise their rightful place in British history.
