RESEARCH STUDIO
This talk will look at the history, biology, and enduring mystery of the sperm whale, from its central role in the whaling industry to what scientists are still finding out today.
The session will connect maritime history with remarkable recent discoveries, including footage of sperm whales carrying the remains of giant squid, the elusive deep-sea creatures that inspired myths such as the Kraken.
The talk will highlight how, despite advances in conservation and technology, much of the deep ocean and its largest inhabitants remain unknown.
Collection Bites is a series of talks presented by the Museum’s Visitor Team, taking place on the first Wednesday of each month. These short talks bring you up close and personal with items from our stores.
