Japan Week tea ceremonies

Join us at Manchester Museum to experience the traditional Japanese tea ceremony as part of Japan Week.

The Japanese tea ceremony, known as “chanoyu” or “sadō,” is a traditional ritual centered around the preparation and serving of matcha (powdered green tea), embodying principles of harmony, respect, purity, and tranquillity.”

The Japanese tea ceremony is a profound cultural tradition that transcends the simple act of drinking tea. It is a celebration of nature, art, and human connection, inviting participants to slow down and appreciate the beauty of the moment.

Whether as a participant or an observer, engaging in this ritual offers a unique insight into Japanese culture and philosophy.

During the tea ceremony, you will experience:

  • Live demonstration by tea masters
  • Matcha tasting
  • Opportunity to wear Japanese kimono and take photos

We advise booking the tea ceremonies in advance but will accept drop-ins too, depending on availability.
