The Belonging Gallery

What creates a sense of belonging for you? What histories, actions and emotions are present in, and go beyond our shared common humanity?

The Belonging Gallery

What creates a sense of belonging for you? What histories, actions and emotions are present in, and go beyond our shared common humanity?

The Belonging Gallery will draw extensively upon the museum’s diverse collections to explore how humans, plants and animals can create a sense of belonging in a place, community or environment.  The stories in this gallery will reveal emotional realities of belonging represented across collections, peoples, species, places and time. Some of these stories will be about experiences of change, and how we strive to make new homes or adapt to shifting environments.

This gallery will draw from multiple cultural perspectives of belonging, ancient and contemporary, to tell empowering stories of how humans, animals, and plants have lived harmoniously with each other and in different landscapes. And where they no longer do, the Belonging Gallery will offer illustrative examples and heartening insights into how we might make new harmonies through care and understanding.
