Get Involved

Volunteers play an important role at Manchester Museum, contributing to the work of the Museum in many different ways. The roles available vary from visitor facing roles on our galleries to providing essential support to staff from the Museum’s curatorial, learning and engagement departments.

It is our aim to work with volunteers from areas local to the Museum and with student volunteers providing an outlet for new skills and perspectives and offering development and learning opportunities.

Opportunities fall into three main areas, when considering volunteering please use the criteria below to help you make your choice:

Visitor Engagement     

Object handling, where our collections are brought to life every day, is a key role for volunteers and we currently have five themed handling tables operating in our galleries: Ancient Egypt, Living Worlds, Money, Manchester Gallery and Live Animals. 

As a visitor engagement volunteer, you should:

Supporting the learning or engagement teams

The Museum offers an extensive programme of events, activities and learning opportunities which complement current exhibitions and animate our collections.  Volunteers in our learning and engagement teams are involved in facilitating a wide range of workshops and activities with all age groups. This can range from supporting visiting to schools to helping at family, adult or outreach events.

As a volunteer supporting the learning and engagement teams, you should:

Behind the scenes        

A small number of volunteers are involved behind the scenes providing important support to staff. Roles include: labeling, cataloguing and assisting with projects relating to our collections. (Please note that there are limited opportunities in the collection areas and we are not currently recruiting for these positions).

As part of The University of Manchester, the Museum is committed to lifelong learning and constantly seeks to provide exciting opportunities and innovative ways to involve volunteers. Current volunteer projects include if: Volunteering for wellbeing supported by Heritage Lottery Fund and the Grundtvig funded This Is Us: Our place, Our Culture. Previous projects have included the In Touch Volunteer Programme (Heritage Lottery Fund) and Senior Volunteer Programme (Grundtvig).

Work Experience
In July, we provide a week-long work placement for Year 10 – Year 13 students, offering a unique insight into the Museum, our collections and the world of work.
Applications for the Work Experience 2016 Summer Placement are now closed. The next placement is currently scheduled for Summer 2017. Please follow our Social Media feeds or check in on this webpage again in the new year for updates.
