PCR
This workshops enables your students to get practical experience of carrying out the modern genetic research technique Polymerase Chain Reaction or PCR, led by PhD students from the University of Manchester. Students extract DNA from their own cheek cells, which is amplified and analysed using agarose gel electrophoresis. Students also have the opportunity to explore current research applications of PCR and discuss some ethical issues associated with the manipulation of DNA.
Session Length: 5 hours (10am to 3pm), Cost: £150, Max. 20 students

Genetic Engineering
This workshop enables your students to get practical experience of modern genetic engineering techniques, led by PhD students from the University of Manchester. Students will carry out a restriction enzyme digest and visualise the results using agarose gel electrophoresis. They will also explore the moral and ethical issues surrounding genetic engineering and considers the current research applications.
Session Length: 3 hours, Cost: £100, Max. 20 students
Cells, Senses and C.elegans (AS/A2 biology or equivalent)
In this exclusive study day, 3rd Year undergraduate students from the University of Manchester will run a selection of hands-on, interactive workshops focussing on exploring further different aspects the A-Level syllabus and relating it to current scientific research. Students will rotate round the different activities in a carousel fashion to make a fast paced and interesting day . Topics covered during the day include stem cells, developmental biology, HIV and the immune system, the eye and female reproductive system. This study day would make an excellent National Science and Engineering Week activity.
Free of charge. Full Day: 10am - 2:30pm Thursday 22nd March 2012
