Early Years Programme

All our Early Years Programmes include story telling, object handling, gallery visits and activities to introduce our youngest visitors to the wonders of The Manchester Museum.  

Nursery and Reception

For up to 15 children 90 minutes
£3.50 per child ( minimum charge £50)

Animal Explorers – Polar Bear Polar Bear
Polar Bear has a problem, some of his animal and bird friends have gone missing! Can you help him find them? Come and explore our Vivarium, Living Worlds and Animal Life (Birds)* galleries, as you embark on this exciting mission to find his missing friends. At the end of the session there is an opportunity to meet one of our live animals from the Vivarium.

* Please note the details of this session will alter to accommodate the closure of the Animal Life (Birds) gallery, please check the website for updates.

Dinosaur Explorers
Say hello to Stan the T.rex and become dinosaur hunters whilst following the footprints around the Fossils gallery. What will you uncover on our dinosaur dig?

Self Programmed
Free of charge, for practitioners who are confident explorers
Suggest group size: 15 children
Booking is essential due to limited space

Play + Learn
Come and enjoy our Play + Learn gallery, there are fun things to do and the space to respond and reflect on all your exploring.

Explorer Sacks
Explorer Sacks are available for self programmed visits and can be booked out when you call to organise your visit.  They include a range of resources and activity ideas to do on the galleries and fun things to do back in your setting.  Topics include Animals, Dinosaurs, Scales and Tails, A Bag of Bugs and Stories From Around the World. Explorer Sheets for these sessions can be downloaded from the Learning Resources section.

Close Encounters With Culture
A fantastic publication, Close Encounters With Culture pdf (851k), that explores how museums and galleries can support the EFYS.  It provides ideas and activities for visits and fun things to do back in your settings, ways to involve parents and an excellent resources list.  It also shares exciting case studies between Manchester based museums and galleries and local SureStart centres.  You can use the publication to plan your visit.

Early Years Collective Conversations

Imagine Their Shadows

Parents Groups

Small Keys Open Big Doors

Small Keys Open Big Doors is a  Manchester SureStart publication evaluating creative projects and  practice across the city  in collaboration with  artists and museums and galleries.
