Workers' houses

The workers' houses were made up of about four rooms. In comparison to the Great Houses they are much smaller. Evidence of stairs up to the roof suggests this area provided a fifth room of sorts, much like the houses in villages today. The western section is similar in plan, with some of the houses having an additional room. As with the previous section, these may also have had steps leading to the roof. The roofing of these houses appears to have consisted of beams of wood with poles place onto. Straw or reeds were tied onto the pole before mud plaster was applied to both the internal and external surfaces. From Petrie's map the area that the workers' houses are in appears cramped, however from the reconstructions done for the purposes of this project it can be seen that this is not the case.

Many different objects were found in the workers' part of the town. The dancer's mask and ivory clappers were found together in one house. The set of worker's tools along with their basket were also found within a house in this area. Some of the offering stands also come from here.
