Identification

Collections Study Centre
Whether it is a coin, an unusual rock, or anything else that relates to our collections, bring your mystery objects to the Collections Study Centre for our free identification service. You will be asked to leave your object at the Museum for our curators to identify. Please note we cannot give valuations.

*Please remember to collect items left for identification. The Museum will dispose of all uncollected items after 6 months.

Rock Drop - drop-in Geology Identification sessions
Our Curator of Earth Sciences, David Gelsthorpe, will be in the Collections Study Centre on the dates below to answer your questions and identify your rocks and fossils.

Portable Antiquities Scheme
Vanessa Oakden, the Portable Antiquities Scheme's Finds Liaison Officer, is currently on maternity leave. In Vanessa’s absence, Bryan Sitch will be recording all archaeological objects found in England and Wales which date from before 1700. during his monthly drop-in sessions listed above.
