Landscape and Identity Conference

The idea for this workshop sprang from The Manchester Museum's developing role within the University of Manchester as a focus for interdisciplinarity, acting as a facilitator to bring together cognate disciplines in an effort to develop or rearticulate connections between different areas and centres of research.

The topic of the workshop considered the relationship between self- and group identity and landscape. Landscape can be landform or land-use, but can also be about people's perceptions of their world and their material engagement with it. This view of landscape therefore brings together anthropologists, archaeologists, social scientists, geographers, historians, art historians, architects, theologians and biologists to consider the role in the construction of self- and group identities of different kinds of landscapes and also changes or re-negotiations of landscapes (natural, political, historical, social, cultural, gendered, religious and ritual, industrial, urban, migratory).
