Legacies
Some of Manchester’s best-loved museums and galleries have joined forces to highlight how important legacy donations can be to them.
The announcement was inspired by the first ever International Legacy Giving Day which took place on Tuesday 13 September 2011.
The partners involved are Manchester Art Gallery, The Whitworth Art Gallery, The Manchester Museum, Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI), People’s History Museum and National Football Museum.
The city’s galleries and museums are grateful recipients of many artefacts and legacies which have been generously bequeathed over the years. Today however, financial donations are becoming increasingly important to the future of museums and galleries. These organisations used International Legacy Giving Day as a focus to encourage people to consider writing a gift into their wills, which will be recognised as a valuable contribution in the years to come.
Directors of Manchester Museums and Galleries released a joint statement commenting on the new initiative:
"Manchester's rich cultural landscape is home to an outstanding array of nationally and internationally important museums and galleries displaying collections of the highest calibre. Our rich history is based on a thirst for knowledge, and over the years our supporters have recognised the importance and the value that museums have for everyone. In times of economic austerity, when it may not be quite as easy as it was to make financial donations, writing a gift in your will is a wonderful and effective way to support the museums and galleries that you care most passionately about. By helping to secure our long-term financial future in this way, you can play a vital part in ensuring that our work will continue to benefit current and future generations.”
Further information about the difference a gift in your Will could make to The Manchester Museum can be found in the 'A lasting cultural legacy' brochure below and its accompanying information sheet 'Including The Manchester Museum in your Will'. We are very grateful to JMW Solicitors LLP and Hurst Accountants for their generosity in sponsoring this brochure.
